Iranian university lecturers write a letter to UN Sec-Gen about Israeli attack on Qatar

Secretary-General of the Islamic Association of University Lecturers of Iran has sent a letter to the Secretary-General of the United Nations António Guterres regarding the terrorist attack by Israel on Qatar.

“There is no doubt that such an act not only poses a threat to a member state of the United Nations but also serves to undermine the international community's efforts to de-escalate tensions,” the letter reads.

The full text of Dr. Mahmoud Sadeghi’s letter is as follows:

His Excellency António Guterres, esteemed Secretary-General of the United Nations

With deep respect,

On behalf of the Islamic Association of University Lecturers, representing a large community of professors and researchers from universities across Iran, I consider it my duty to express our profound concern regarding the recent terrorist attack by the Israeli regime on residential areas in the state of Qatar. Unfortunately, this attack resulted in the deaths of several Palestinian and Qatari nationals and severely endangered the security of the country's civilian population. Furthermore, this action has had clear negative consequences for regional and international peace and security.

This incident and similar events, which are in clear contradiction with the fundamental principles of the UN Charter, including respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of nations, have occurred at a time when Qatar was playing a key role in facilitating dialogue and mediation to halt the violence in the region. There is no doubt that such an act not only poses a threat to a member state of the United Nations but also serves to undermine the international community's efforts to de-escalate tensions.

Given the importance of this matter, while appreciating your prompt and explicit condemnation of this aggressive act by Israel, we expect the following:

That necessary and deterrent practical measures be put in place to prevent the recurrence of such incidents, which harm the peace process in the region.

That comprehensive support for diplomatic and political avenues be strengthened with the aim of ending the Palestinian crisis and the suffering of the oppressed people of Gaza.

That, in light of the recent agreement between the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, necessary precautions be taken to prevent potential warmongering actions by the Israeli regime in this regard.

The members of the Islamic Association of University Lecturers believe that sustainable and just security in the Middle East can only be achieved through dialogue, respect for the rights of nations, and adherence to the principles of international law.

Sincerely,

Dr. Mahmoud Sadeghi

Secretary-General of the Islamic Association of University Lecturers of Iran

* Copies of the letter were also sent to the president of the United Nations Security Council, the Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, the Secretary-General of the Arab League, and the Secretary-General of the (Persian) Gulf Cooperation Council.
