Iran's Palangan village showcased as model of sustainable tourism at BRICS meeting

Iran’s historic Palangan village in western Kurdestan Province was spotlighted as a model for sustainable tourism development at a BRICS meeting in Brazil, the Iranian Cultural Heritage, Tourism and Handicrafts Ministry announced on May 12.

The village was presented during a core session of the summit attended by BRICS members including China, Brazil, South Africa, India, Russia, the United Arab Emirates, Iran, and Indonesia, IRNA reported.

A short film showing the stepped architecture of Palangan caught the attention of attendees. According to Mostafa Fatemi, Director General of Domestic Tourism Development, the village was recognized as “a successful symbol” of community-driven tourism that preserves both the local culture and traditional landscape.

Fatemi said Palangan represents Iran’s broader effort to strike a balance between “eco-conscious growth” and cultural preservation.

He described the village as a standout example of how heritage, environment, and local participation can work hand in hand.

“In recent years, the ministry has prioritized villages with both natural and cultural value,” he said. This strategic shift, he noted, has led to growing international recognition, such as Palangan’s showcase at the BRICS forum.

Palangan is one of eight Iranian villages nominated for the 2025 Best Tourism Villages global project.
