He made the remarks during his weekly press briefing in Tehran on Monday, two days after the Islamic Republic confirmed that it had received elements of the US proposal via Oman.
Baghaei said that receiving a text does not mean accepting it, nor does it mean that the text is acceptable.
“We will respond based on the principles and rights of the Iranian nation,” he said, adding that the country will not give a positive response to any proposal that includes radical and maximalist demands and ignores Iran’s inherent interests.
He also noted that any nuclear agreement must include the continuation of Iran’s uranium enrichment activities and an end to cruel sanctions against the nation.
‘Idea of consortium cannot replace domestic enrichment’
The spokesman further touched on reports that say the US proposal calls for Iran to cease all uranium enrichment activities and instead be part of a regional consortium to produce nuclear power.
He said the consortium initiative “is not a new idea, … but what is important is that it can in no way replace enrichment inside Iran.”
The remarks came after the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) claimed in a report that Iran has carried out secret nuclear activities and raised concerns about the country’s stockpile of uranium enriched up to 60% purity.
Iran rejected the politically-motivated report, saying it was based on fabricated data provided by Israel.
Using the IAEA report, the United States, along with allies Britain, France, and Germany — known as the E3 — plans to submit a draft anti-Iran resolution for the IAEA’s Board of Governors to adopt at its next meeting in Vienna on June 9-13, media reports said.
Also in his comments, Baghaei condemned the moves by the European trio of Britain, France, and Germany (E3) against Iran at the IAEA.
The E3 prepared the draft resolution against Iran despite good progress made during IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi’s recent visit to Tehran, he said. “It is natural that Iran cannot leave such provocative actions unanswered.”
Moreover, Baghaei referred to threats by the Europeans to activate the so-called “snapback mechanism” to re-impose the United Nations sanctions against Iran.
“Considering the moves of the opposite sides, we have predicted scenarios and will take steps in accordance with their actions. The opposite sides are clearly aware that if they resort to unconstructive mechanisms, Iran has also countermeasures,” he said.
Meanwhile, the spokesman said the US actions and policies are important to Iran.
In the US, Baghaei stressed, there are “wise voices that do not seek war [with Iran], but in practice, unfortunately, American policies over the past four decades have always followed the path of confrontation and hostility.”
‘Israel sole obstacle to nuke-free West Asia’
Elsewhere in his remark, he said Iran is seriously pursuing the issue of a nuclear weapons-free West Asia.
Israel is the only obstacle to the realization of a region free from nuclear arms, he added.
Baghaei also condemned Israel’s “multiple crimes” in the Gaza Strip amid the ongoing genocidal war against Palestinians in the besieged territory.
Hospitals, doctors and nurses have always been among the targets of the Zionist regime while under international law, medical facilities and staff must be immune from any attack.
