UN Office in Tehran:

Civilians must never be targeted

The United Nations Representation Office in Tehran issued a message affirming its solidarity with the people of Iran during this difficult and uncertain time, warning that escalating military tensions pose serious risks to civilians, regional stability, and global peace.

The message—posted on the UN office’s official account on X—states:

“We stand with the people of Iran during this challenging and uncertain period. We are deeply concerned by reports of civilian casualties and strongly condemn such actions. Civilians must never be targeted, and compliance with international humanitarian law must be a top priority.”

The message further underscores that attacks on nuclear facilities are unacceptable and violate international law, including the principles of the UN Charter and the frameworks of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Such actions carry the risk of irreparable harm to both human life and the environment, and must cease immediately.

The statement continues:

“The only path out of conflict is diplomacy. De-escalation and dialogue, grounded in international law and the spirit of the United Nations Charter, are the safest routes to preserving lives and securing the peace that is urgently needed.”

Echoing UN Secretary-General António Guterres, the message concludes with a firm call:

“Enough escalation. It must stop. Peace and diplomacy must prevail.”

The UN reiterated its appeal to all parties to step away from confrontation and choose the path of dialogue.
