Former CIA chief warns: War with Iran means the end of U.S. security

The stark remarks by Leon Panetta, former CIA Director and U.S. Secretary of Defense, regarding the dangers of attacking Iran, reflect a serious warning from American policymakers about repeating the mistakes of the Iraq war. He cautions that a war with Iran would escalate into a full-scale regional conflict.

Nournews: Leon Panetta, former Director of the CIA and former U.S. Secretary of Defense, issued a stern warning during a recent interview, recalling one of America's most disastrous strategic miscalculations in recent decades: the 2003 invasion of Iraq. He described the war as a “horrible mistake” that yielded no security gains and instead led to widespread regional instability, the rise of extremism, and security vacuums—consequences that still plague the Middle East and U.S. global interests.

Panetta stressed the importance of learning from that experience and urged the Trump administration (and any future U.S. president) to avoid initiating a new war in the region, especially with Iran. According to him, just as the U.S. wrongly assumed the Iraq war would be swift and effective—only for it to turn into a prolonged and complex conflict—any military action against Iran would similarly trigger a far-reaching regional crisis.

Iran: Not an easy target, but the spark of a crisis chain

Panetta underscored that even a limited airstrike against Iran would undoubtedly drag the United States into a broader regional war. This clear and direct warning reflects his deep understanding of Iran’s defense infrastructure and its capacity for retaliation. Iran is a nation with widespread regional influence and strategic capabilities to respond beyond its geographic borders.

Unlike Iraq in 2003, which was weakened by sanctions and international isolation, today’s Iran is not only militarily resilient but also an established power in diplomacy, regional security, and proxy networks. The notion that a limited attack could achieve U.S. strategic objectives without severe costs is, in Panetta’s view, a dangerous illusion and a repeat of the same flawed calculations that led to the Iraq war.

A warning to Trump and the future of global security

Panetta addressed then-President Donald Trump directly, stating that he “must learn the lesson.” His statement, however, extends beyond one individual—it is a broader warning to the U.S. decision-making establishment, which at times is swayed by domestic politics, the military-industrial complex, and media pressure, leading to costly strategic choices.

As the Middle East stands at the threshold of a redefined security and political order, any military intervention could throw this fragile balance into deep turmoil. If the U.S. fails to heed the advice of strategic thinkers like Panetta, history may well repeat the mistake of Iraq—but this time on a far more dangerous scale.
