Iran, Egypt FMs say continued consultations key to maintaining regional stability

Iran and Egypt have stressed the need for continued consultations at regional and multilateral levels to prevent the escalation of crises and preserve stability in the region.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and his Egyptian counterpart Badr Abdelatty met on Sunday before the beginning of an extraordinary meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Council of Foreign Ministers in Saudi Arabia’s city of Jeddah.

The two ministers exchanged views about the latest regional and international developments, particularly the critical humanitarian situation in Gaza caused by the continued blockade against the Strip and the Israeli regime’s plans to intensify its attacks and completely occupy Gaza City.

They urged Muslim countries to take immediate and effective action to stop Israel’s genocide against the Palestinian people and accelerate the entry of humanitarian aid to the besieged Strip.

Araghchi stressed the importance of utilizing the Muslim countries’ capacities to “effectively” counter the Tel Aviv regime’s hostile measures.

"Solidarity and unity among Muslim countries in the face of common threats, especially the Israeli regime’s expansionist policies, are of particular importance,” he said.

The Jeddah meeting comes amid Israel's planned occupation of Gaza City, its crimes of genocide and starvation, and the unprecedented humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

In an article published in Asharq al-Awsat ahead of the OIC meeting, Araghchi warned that the illusion of a “Greater Israel” represents an existential danger and a grave threat to international peace and security, calling on Muslim nations to take collective action to counter Israel’s expansionist agenda.

Araghchi wrote that the upcoming session must serve as a turning point to solidify the collective resolve of Muslim states.

Israel launched a US-backed genocidal war on Gaza on October 7, 2023, after the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas waged the surprise Operation Al-Aqsa Flood against the occupying entity in response to the regime's decades-long campaign of death and devastation against Palestinians.

The regime’s genocidal war on Gaza has so far killed at least 62,622 Palestinians, mostly women and children.
